The grant will contribute to the purchase of new toys, salaries, shelving, website and conference expenses.
The library, which has served Waiheke children since 2001, holds three sessions a fortnight at the old Surfdale Post Office, and has just expanded its membership from 45 to 65 families.
Toy library coordinator Kelly Bickerton says the funding will make a huge difference.
“Because the toys are borrowed every two weeks by different families, their life is limited and we often have to replace them on a modest budget. Thanks to this money, we can now buy a whole lot of great new toys, hopefully at a discounted price, to cater to our expanded membership.”
The toys, including scooters, bikes, puzzles, games, dress-ups, musical instruments, train sets and construction sets, can cost up to $200 – putting them out of reach for an average income family.
