A $180,000 contribution from Lottery’s Environment and Heritage Committee funded restoration of the historic church, including work on the timber-panelled interior, replacing the rotten steeple and beams, and completely rebuilding the front entry, interior porch and choir vestry.
The restoration project of the 1889 church used recycled materials where possible, and took 18 months to finish with locals, church-goers and conservationists working together – and the hard work paid off with high accolades in 2008.
In September, St Barnabas’ Reverend Stephen King accepted the Wellington Civic Trust prize for Best Preservation of a Building – recognition of projects that have added beauty and meaning to the city.
