The $5 Pure Luxury ticket was sold at Bayfair Lotto in Mt Maunganui and was a spur-of-the-moment purchase for the winner.
“I usually buy a $1 Instant Kiwi ticket when I buy my Lotto ticket, but this time I was buying my Big Wednesday ticket and thought I’d upscale to a $5 ticket,” says the winner.
The winner, who wishes to remain anonymous, scratched the ticket in the car park before driving home.
“The first number I scratched was a match to the winning numbers and when I scratched the prize amount I wasn’t wearing my glasses, so I thought I’d won $10,000,” he laughs.
“It wasn’t until I went back into Bayfair Lotto and got the ticket checked that I realised I had won $100,000,” he says.
“There were some other people in the queue and they heard that I’d won a big prize and they bought some Instant Kiwi tickets – I started a rush of buying,” he laughs.
“I mean, who wins $100,000 on a scratchy?,” he jokes. “I couldn’t stop giggling to myself thinking that I’d won so much money on the first time I bought one of these tickets.”
“This money will see me debt and mortgage-free, it’s unbelievable,” says the winner.
There is now one top prize left on the $5 Pure Luxury ticket.
