The winner, who wishes to remain anonymous, says he’s always been a grumpy sort and the earthquakes and aftershocks in Christchurch over the past year haven’t helped his demeanour.
“Our house wasn’t badly damaged in the first big earthquake but our home contents were ruined in the second one in February,” says the winner.
“I managed to keep my job throughout all the troubles but we didn’t know whether our insurance would cover the damage to our possessions,” says the winner.
“I got an email from our insurance company this week with a payout offer and I was so stoked for a change that I went and bought one of these $10 Instant Kiwi tickets because I knew the money was finally coming in,” he adds.
“I was still in the shop when I scratched it and jeez it was pretty blimmin’ amazing to see that $250,000 come up on the ticket,” he laughs.
The winner plans to pay off all his debts and mortgage and will share some money with his kids and grandkids.
“I’m usually such a grumpy old man but I’m not so grumpy now, winning has been amazing,” he says.
